Why PET became the default for bottles
Clarity is the headline property. PET is one of very few plastics with a genuinely clear, glass-like appearance, which is why it dominates categories where the product sells on how it looks. Juice, water, cooldrinks and many cosmetic products all rely on the customer seeing the colour and quality of what is inside.

Size follows the serving occasion. Smaller formats such as 100ml and 250ml suit single serve, samples and concentrated products. 500ml is the retail workhorse across drinks and sauces. 1 litre and larger cover family packs and food service.
Where PET is the wrong choice
PET has real limits and it is worth knowing them before you commit to a run.
Heat is the main one. Standard PET softens above roughly 60 to 70 degrees and can deform, so it is not suited to hot filling unless you specify a heat-set grade. If your process involves warm or hot filling, PP is usually the better material and you should raise the fill temperature with your supplier before ordering.
Harsh chemicals are the second. PET handles water, most beverages and mild formulations well, but strong solvents, caustic cleaners and certain essential oils can degrade it over time. For aggressive contents, HDPE offers far broader chemical resistance.

PET and rPET in South Africa

Once PET is the right material, three decisions remain. Size follows the serving occasion or usage rate. Shape affects shelf presence, labelling area and how efficiently the bottles pack onto a pallet. And the neck finish determines which closures fit, which is where most ordering errors happen.
